Genesis 15 - Given and Guaranteed

"Verse 17 says, 'When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.' These were symbols of God’s holy presence. But notice that God alone passes between the dead animals. By doing so, He indicates that He accepts responsibility for both sides of the agreement."
